Earth Day & Cell Phones for Soldiers in The Market at Comcast Center

CELL PHONES FOR SOLDIERS AND THE MARKET & SHOPS AT COMCAST CENTER, KICK OFF CELL PHONE COLLECTION DRIVE IN PHILADELPHIA, PA.

Philadelphia, PA., 03/27/10– More than 150,000 troops are serving overseas and are away from their families. Cell Phones for Soldiers, and The Market & Shops at Comcast Center are calling on all Americans to support for these brave men and women by donating your unused cell phones. Cell Phones for Soldiers hopes to collect over 50,000 cell phones this year to help keep troops connected with their families.

“Over the past few years, we have been amazed by the generosity of others. But, we have also seen the need to support our troops continue.” says Brittany Bergquist, Cell Phones for Soldiers co-founder. “It is easy for Americans to make a small sacrifice of support by donating their unused cell phones, and providing families with a much-needed connection to their loved ones overseas.”

Local residents can support the collection drive by donating their phones at any The Market & Shops at Comcast Center location, including:

- 1701 John F. Kennedy Boulevard, (215)496-1810

“We’re proud to show our support for U.S. soldiers, and to contribute to a worthy cause like Cell Phones for Soliders,” says Joe Wolf, Retail Director of The Market

Cell Phones for Soldiers was founded by teenagers Robbie and Brittany Bergquist from Norwell, Mass., with $21 of their own money. Since then, the registered 501c3 non-profit organization has raised almost $1 million in donations and distributed more than 500,000 prepaid calling cards to soldiers serving overseas.

“We are continuously overwhelmed by the enthusiastic support of thousands of Americans who have helped our troops speak with their loved ones,” says the teens’ father, Bob Bergquist. “However, the need for support keeps growing as more soldiers are sent to the Middle East or are asked to serve extended tours of duty.”

Through increased fundraising efforts, the Bergquist family hopes to raise more than $9 million in the next five years to fund new programs, such as providing video phones and prepaid service to allow soldiers abroad to see their families on a regular basis.

The donated phones are sent to ReCellular, which pays Cell Phones for Soldiers for each phone – enough to provide an hour of talk time to soldiers abroad.

Approximately half of the phones ReCellular processes are reconditioned and resold to wholesale companies in over 40 countries around the world. Phones and components that cannot be refurbished are dismantled and recycled to reclaim materials, including:

• Gold, silver and platinum from circuit boards
• Copper wiring from phone chargers
• Nickel, iron, cadmium and lead from battery packs
• Plastic from phone cases and accessories

About Cell Phones for Soldiers:
Cell Phones for Soldiers was created by Brittany & Robbie Bergquist of Norwell MA. After reading a story about a soldier who ran up a huge phone bill calling home from Iraq, these two teenagers decided to help out. They started by opening an account with $21.00 of their own money. They are collecting cash donations and old cell phones. The cell phones are recycled for cash and the proceeds are used to buy prepaid calling cards for our soldiers serving in the Middle East. Cell Phones For Soldiers is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Their efforts have motivated people and businesses around the country to donate to this worthy cause. Their goal is to provide every US soldier with a way to call home for free. For more information, please visithttp://www.cellphonesforsoldiers.com/

Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey's The Greatest Show On Earth Stops By the Comcast Center

The Ringling Bros. Circus Clowns stopped by the Comcast Center of Philadelphia to spread some cheer and and a few good laughs.

The Ringling Brothers Circus was a circus founded in the United States in 1884. Ringling Brothers Circus eventually joined with the Barnum & Bailey Circus to become Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus, the Greatest Show on Earth. What distinguished the Ringling Brothers Circus from others was its honest and fair attitude toward the public. In 1889 two of the Ringlings went to Philadelphia where they purchased railroad cars and parade equipment from Adam Forepaugh, a venerable showman who had a show on the road since 1864. In 1907 the brothers purchased the Barnum & Bailey circus and ran the two circuses separately until they merged them into one unit in 1919 when they also moved the winter quarters to Sarasota, Florida.

Retailers fill Comcast concourse

The Market at Comcast Center, the concourse level of shops and eateries underneath Center City’s largest skyscraper, is just shy of being fully leased up a year after opening despite a tough climate for retailers.

The 45,000 square feet are 97 percent occupied and just two spaces at roughly 500 square feet each remain to be filled. John Gattuso, senior vice president at Liberty Property Trust, isn’t worried those two spaces will linger vacant and he wants to make certain the right tenants fill the space.

“I think we set out to do something different,” said Gattuso, whose company developed the 58-story skyscraper for Comcast Corp.’s headquarters that is jointly owned by Liberty and a German bank.

“Instead of finding who would pay the highest rent, we looked at it more as something that would set the tone for the whole development.”

Though the space sits below street level and connects to the commuter rail tunnel, its feel is much more Rockefeller Center than Market East. A newspaper and gum stand didn’t survive even though 25,000 people funnel through the space monthly. However, Di Bruno Brothers, Tokyo Sushi and Catering, Under the C Seafood, LaScala’s, Sook Hee’s Produce and Termini Brothers have so far thrived.

Two new tenants — Omega Optical and Sony Style — recently opened shops and existing tenants are hopeful they will help drive more shoppers to the space. Rents run about $70 to $80 a square foot.

“I think it’s a great location,” said Lily Ferrill, manager of Under the C Seafood, which also sells fresh fish at the Ardmore Farmers Market and Reading Terminal Market. “It’s doing great.”

The space is heavy on eateries with about 80 percent of it filled with food joints compared to 20 percent other retail. Liberty looks at the space as an amenity for its office tenants that reside in the building and as a key component to making the mixed-use development a success. The building also houses Table 31, a white tablecloth restaurant developed by chefs Georges Perrier and Chris Scarduzio.

“In light of the economic environment, we’re very pleased,” Gattuso said.

While the space has successfully leased up, it’s not without its challenges.

“This is a good location for lunch,” said John Kim, who owns Tokyo Sushi and opened his third store in Comcast Center. But for evening and Saturday business, it’s not so good, he said.

“The market tenants are still finding our way to capitalize on this undeniable destination,” said Bill Mignucci, who runs Di Bruno Brothers and opened its fourth location in 2,000 square feet. “I consider the Comcast Center the Rockefeller Center of Philadelphia. From a business point of view, it’s a destination with rail, great public space and you’re in an occupied building in the middle of the Central Business District and two blocks away you have 10,000 residents.”

After nearly a year, however, Di Bruno’s and the other tenants are getting a handle on business volume and demand. For example, Di Bruno incorporated breakfast offerings to capture the commuter business coming off of the rails.

Gattuso acknowledges that after the evening rush and on Saturdays, tenants could use more traffic. Effects are ongoing to draw tourists who visit the lobby as well as Logan Square residents during off peak hours. To that end, a wine and food festival is scheduled for later this month.

“Whether there’s a market for that today is questionable but we’re committed to it,” Gattuso said.
